In the ancient world, it was a terrible disease. Lepers became outcasts and had to live outside the city. According to the interpretation of Mosaic laws, a person must keep 2 meters or 6 feet from a leper. If the wind is blowing from the side of a leper to a person, there should be 150 feet or 45 metres. In essence, it was a terrible problem, a dangerous condition, a hopeless situation, loss of dignity, rejection and shame. The Lord healed ten lepers. (Luke 17:11-19)
Pleaded for mercy
The ten lepers, nine were Jewish, and one was a Samaritan, stood at a distance, as the Law required, and pleaded for His mercy. The Lord sent them to show themselves to a priest. Initially, they were shocked, but they rushed to the nearest synagogue, where they could find a priest. As they went, they were healed.
Mature and saving faith.
There are three levels of faith. First level of faith is exhibited in their coming to the Lord Jesus. All of them trusted in Him, believed He was merciful, and had power to heal them.
Second, a level of faith was exhibited in the obedience to go and show to the priests. All of them went to the priest. They were all healed as they went. Nine of them went to their families to celebrate their new life or went chasing their dreams. But, for them, it was casual or just an accident, but not a great sign and wonder of God. They obeyed only to receive blessings.
Third, the level of faith is gratefulness, worship, and witness. The Samaritan Leper had a heart of gratitude. He wanted to express that, so he returned. Only the spiritually healed could be grateful, as gratefulness is not natural for humans. When the Samaritan leper expressed his gratefulness, he worshipped the Lord. The Lord assured him that he was whole. People around him who saw him glorified God. His life was a witness. He became a follower or disciple of the Lord.
Do I have the spiritual discipline of being grateful?
