Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, J.N. Manokaran grew up in a Christian home, one of four children of Joseph, from a traditional Christian family, and Suganthi, a first-generation believer.
In 1979, when he was seventeen and studying civil engineering, his mother died. Grief pulled him away from faith and into campus politics. When he and other students were suspended and not readmitted, it felt as though his whole life had collapsed.
Alone at home, he turned back to the God of his mother, and promised to serve Him. God honoured that prayer. He completed his education, served with the Government, and gave his life to teaching the Word, training leaders and thinking deeply about mission in India and beyond.
