In some places in India, there is a survey of the identity of people. Christians were in a dilemma. Some wanted to give their caste as their identity. Caste is an identity by birth according to the Indian Hierarchical social structure, inspired by Hinduism. Some Christian people believed that taking the caste identity would get them the benefits of affirmative action from the government. A few considered their identity as a Christian, a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. A servant of God said like Elijah: “If caste is the Lord, choose it; if Christ is the Lord and Saviour, choose Him.” (I Kings 18:21) It is not possible to travel in two boats simultaneously.
Jesus is Lord: In the Roman Empire, the Christians were persecuted. To be a Roman Citizen, it was essential to go to the nearest shrine each year and take an oath stating, “Caesar is Lord.” If it is not done, they lose their citizenship. Early Christians chose to declare, “Jesus is Lord.” The local Roman officials considered Christians to be anti-nationals, arrested them, tortured them, and gave death sentences. However, the Roman Empire perished, but the Church exists. The gates of hell, which could be the unjust anger of the power of an Empire or State, cannot prevail over the church. (Matthew 16:18)
Identity: The Bible declares that those who receive the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord become sons and daughters of the Living God. (John 1:12) First, this is an eternal identity, unlike earthly identities that have an expiry date and are worthless after death. Yes, their identity is not corrupted with caste or clan or race, but they are like angels. Second, disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ are citizens of Heaven. (Philippians 3:20) Earthly nations could snatch their citizenship, but they can neither grant nor snatch their citizenship in heaven. Third, what is their role on this earth? They are ambassadors of Christ on this earth. (II Corinthians 5:20) They are the salt of the earth, light of the world, live with kingdom priority, follow a values system of righteousness, and are like a city on a hill.
Is Jesus my Lord?
