All disciples should not only know the truth, but they should also defend the faith. (Jude 1:3) One great example is Athanasius, when he was 27 years old, stood for truth, defended the most holy faith, and created the Nicene Creed that has helped the church for seventeen centuries to remain orthodox and faithful to the Scripture. He was the main defender in the Council of Nicaea (modern Iznik, Türkiye, which happened in 325 AD)
Born in Alexandria: Athanasius was in AD 293, Alexandria, Egypt and died there on 2 May, 373. He was exiled five times by four emperors.
False accusation and exile: Athanasius was falsely accused of interfering with the supply of grain. Without seeking evidence, Constantine exiled him in 336. Though he returned for a brief time when Constantine died, he was again banished in 338 by his son Constantius. In 346, he returned to Egypt, where he was welcomed like a hero. Again in 356, an attempt was made to arrest him, but he withdrew to Upper Egypt and was protected by monasteries and friendly houses. After political changes, he was able to come to Alexandria in 361 and convened the synod of Alexandria, appealing to hold the same faith. Again, he was exiled. Finally, he was able to spend a few years in peace before his death in 373.
Theological work: During banishment, he wrote defending the truth and condemning Arians: Four Orations Against the Arians. He prepared the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity – three persons, one substance and on the divinity of the Holy Spirit. He also wrote apologetics: Against the Heathen and The Incarnation of the Word of God.
Courage and steadfastness: Athanasius is a great example of boldness, who lived by convictions. In the 48 years of ministry, he faced threats from emperors, banishment, threats, and had to live in caves, monasteries, and deserts…Yet, he was steadfast in faith, love for the Lord, fervency of spirit, and always eager to teach the truth. His legacy has shaped the faith of the Church for seventeen centuries.
Do I have a steadfast spirit and bold commitment to the Truth?
