Death by Digital Counsel

When 16-year-old Adam Raine died by suicide. But within weeks, his parents discovered something more chilling: that their son’s closest confidant in his final weeks was not a friend, a teacher, or a counsellor — but ChatGPT. “Over the course of just a few months and thousands of chats, ChatGPT became Adam’s closest confidant, leading him to open up about his anxiety and mental distress. The App validated his “most harmful and self-destructive thoughts” and “pulled Adam deeper into a dark and hopeless place.” Advised to commit suicide, he did. (India Today, 27 August 2025)
Biblical warning: To be a blessed man, he should not walk in the counsel of the wicked, stand in the way of sinners, and sit in the company of mockers and scorners. But should meditate on the Word of God, day and night. (Psalm 1:1-3)
Counsellors: Today, young people like to go to impersonal counsellors, in secret, using their smartphone screens. The smartphones have the capacity to make users stupid. A blessed man who meditates on the Scripture daily will get Godly counsel, as God is the wonderful counsellor. (Isaiah 9:6) Some godly counsellors are leaders in the church. Instead of approaching them, when boys like Adam approach an App or AI, they will not get Godly counsel, but wicked counsel.
Ways: Generally, a wicked counsellor would lead people into sinful ways. They begin to stand with sinners or take the standpoint of sinners. Thus, they depart from Godly ways of righteousness, into paths that ultimately lead to death. According to digital counsel, the roads are paths of life, goodness, right, and pleasure, but in reality, they are dead ends. (Proverbs 14:12)
Scorners: Sadly, many chat groups in the Digital media platforms are companies of scorners, sceptics, and mockers. They blaspheme against God, His Holy Word, the Church, and the works of God.
Death: Heeding ungodly digital counsel, forming opinions based on such sinful counsel, will lead to being in the company of blasphemers, which will result in eternal separation from God, the Second Death.
