German Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled Germany from 2005 to 2021. All her life she lived with her husband in an apartment and not a villa. In an interview, she shared that she did not have servants to her in the home, both did all the household chores. When journalists asked, if she had only a few suits, she said, “Yes, I am a government servant.” Interestingly, she mentioned that the washing machine would be operated during an appropriate time at night, without disturbing their neighbors. A model of servant leadership and demonstration for loving neighbor as yourself. (Mark 12:31) The Royal Law has become a cultural value due to the Protestant Reformation in Western countries.
Service: Though she was a powerful leader in Europe for sixteen long years, she saw her political power and position to serve the people. She did not use her power neither to oppress nor to impress others.
Simplicity: When petty politicians want to live in mansions, with servants and drivers, Angela lived a simple life. Sadly, even Christian leaders do not live simple lifestyles, and some are competing with the celebrities of the world. For some, the number of servants or soldiers for their escorts determines their self-esteem.
Sensitivity: Being sensitive to the needs of others is a Christian virtue. Many people have an attitude: “It is my house; I will do whatever I want.” Even celebrities like cricket heroes and cine personalities have loud parties disturbing the whole neighborhood. Though using a washing machine was Angela’s legitimate right, she cared for her neighbor, so that their sleep may not be disturbed. Loving neighbor means respecting their rights, treating them with dignity, not disturbing or troubling them, and letting them lead a life of peace.
Satisfaction: Paul taught that contentment with Godliness is a great gain. (I Timothy 6:6) When there were political leaders who changed their dresses several times a day, Angela had a few suits that could be counted and remembered. She said that as a government servant, that is what she could afford.
