Christian spirituality is dependent on God, His Word, and His Spirit. The Psalmist describes this spirituality in a few verses. (Psalm 119:169-175) To lead a Godly, spiritual, and God-honoring life, the following are needed. That was the Psalmist’s prayer and cries, and should be our prayers too.
Understanding: Reading the Scripture is important, but more important is to understand and apply it in day-to-day life. First, some just read without understanding. Second, some know the literal meaning but fail to grasp the spiritual truths. Third, some understand the spiritual truths, but fail to obey because of a stubborn heart.
Deliverance: The Psalmist cries to the Lord to deliver him according to His promises in the Word. Deliverance from sin, temptations, tribulations, the world, the attractions of the deceptive riches, lust of eyes, lust of flesh, pride of life, evil conspiracies, and wicked companions. Lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil was an expression of vulnerability and desire for deliverance in the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6: 13)
Worship God rightly: God should be worshipped in holiness, awe, fear, and with a heart full of gratitude. Thanksgiving and praises are always a deficit in a believer’s life.
Helping Hand: God has promised to be a very present help in the times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1) The Psalmist pleads for that based on His Promises. The Right Hand of God gives victory. (Psalm 118:16)
Long for your salvation: The Psalmist longs for salvation, for it is forgiveness from the penalty of past sins, power to overcome and defeat sin at present, and be in Heaven where sin can never enter. All believers pant for that eternal life, and hence await His Glorious Coming.
Strength to persevere: Like the lost sheep, it is possible for disciples to go astray. The Psalmist asks the Lord to search him if he goes astray. God must strengthen us to persevere till the end. Only God can keep believers from falling. (Jude 1:24-25) No one can snatch His sheep from the Father’s hand. (John 10:29)
Do I depend on God, His Word to grow in my spiritual life?
