Exploitation is common in all cultures, societies, and nations. The weak and vulnerable would be exploited in most situations. The Bible warns against taking advantage of sojourners, immigrants, foreigners, and strangers. (Exodus 22:21; 23:9; Deuteronomy 24:14; and Leviticus 19:33-34)
Love your neighbour: The attitude, relationships, and behaviour of citizens of the Promised Land is love. Their lifestyle should demonstrate love, as all are created in the image of God. As Christians and Kingdom citizens, the Church has to exemplify this commandment. Sadly, love seems to be missing elements in interactions inside and outside the church. The Good Samaritan helped a needy, helpless, and powerless man, while religious leaders ignored him. (Luke 10:25-37)
Kindness: As fellow humans, Christians should show kindness. It is not simple politeness and courtesy. It is reflecting God’s attributes of generosity, graciousness, and gentleness. It is described as one of the Fruits of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23) It is also thoughtful, considerate, merciful, and appropriate help to those who are in need. Putting others’ needs first is a fundamental aspect of true kindness. Niceness is external, while kindness is from the inner personality or heart. Even the difficult, dirty, defiled, and defiant people are shown respect and dignity. Showing kindness is walking the second mile. (Matthew 5:41)
Do not take advantage: First, do not take advantage because a person does not know a language. Religious elites declare some languages as sacred and deprive millions of people of knowing the truth. Second, people are exploited because of ignorance. Many poor people belonging to low caste or lower class are not aware of their rights. This ignorance could be exploited. Third, People with physical disabilities could be exploited. The Law warned not to put stumbling blocks before the blind or curse the deaf. (Leviticus 19:14) Four, some people could be desperate for survival, and such people are exploited. A pair of millstones or an upper millstone should not be taken as a guarantee. It is snatching their livelihood, a very means of having their daily bread. (Deuteronomy 24:6) Five, by giving false promises and assurances, people are exploited.
