Duty of Governments

Mountains represent the human government in the Bible. Big mountains would be his national government, and little hills would be local governments, all functioning in righteousness. A Godly government will achieve these three things. (Psalm 72:1-4) Those who are given the stewardship of governance are called servants of God. (Romans 13: 3)
Justice: Godly governments excel in exemplary actions of righteousness. God’s holiness is manifested as God’s justice. The poor, marginalized, and oppressed are deprived of justice. The rich and influential people make sure that the poor are kept away from the judicial process that could give them justice. Godly government is sensitive to the whispers, groanings, and cries that are ignored or silenced by prominent citizens.
Rescue and deliver: Humans have the evil capacity to enslave others, become oppressors, and exploiters. Instead of rescuing people from slavery and delivering them from oppressors, some people become wicked exploiters. Even a judge could become a tormentor and hold others as slaves. A UN judge has been jailed for six years and four months after forcing a young woman to work as a slave in the UK. (The Guardian, 2 May 2025) Righteous governments will sensitize and create awareness of the standards expected from the governing officials and common citizens.
Punish: The government not only delivers people, dispenses justice, it should also punish lawbreakers. Such lawbreakers should be punished in such a way that they may not gather strength or wealth or influence or connections to commit wickedness again. Sadly, people foolishly elect lawbreakers to become lawmakers in the government. Lawbreakers and Oppressors could be slanderers, whisperers, those who use flattery, and wicked. Those who hold government positions should be a terror to those who do evil and punish them. (Romans 13:3) By punishing the wicked, such governments warn the potential future trouble-makers. They also create an environment for peace and justice.
Kingdom of God: The Messiah has the government upon His shoulders, and disciples are called to extend His Kingdom to the nooks and corners of this earth. (Isaiah 9:6)
