Recently there was an uproar in social media. One Christian worker had posted soliciting funds for him to watch a Premier League match at the stadium in his hometown. He appealed as if he was entitled to such entertainment. Any act or behavior a Christian does has repercussions and consequences. Hence, all believers will be judged by God’s standards. Three biblical principles could be applied to know if the act is God-honoring, meaningful, and purposeful.
Discipleship principle: As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, there are priorities taught by the Lord. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) If going to the match will extend the Kingdom of God, and exalt his righteousness in the given context, then it could be done. Some make friends among the fans of such matches to share the gospel. The life of a Christian cannot be disconnected from the Kingdom and righteousness of God.
Stewardship Principle: All disciples are called to be stewards of all God-given resources, time, and opportunities. All these are God’s gracious gifts, disciples are not owners but just authorized to use or manage them. Is it good stewardship to spend money, and time, on a trivia like a sports event? The Parable of Talents teaches that all disciples should invest like the five talented and two talented persons. Stewards should use resources to optimize, strategically, faithfully, and wisely.
Call principle: God has called his children to be witnesses, instruments of righteousness, and ambassadors in the world. (Acts 1:8; Romans 6:13; II Corinthians 5:20) A knife used in the kitchen, need not be sterilized. However, the instrument in the hands of a surgeon in an operation theatre needs to be sterilized. So, is a servant of God, who is used by God as an instrument of righteousness. Each person is placed in a specific context that is unique and historic. Like Esther, they are called to minister in ‘such a time like this.’ (Esther 4:14)
Do I make decisions based on Biblical Principles?
