Eunice – a model mother!

Eunice was from a Jewish family. She became a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. Her son Timothy became a stalwart of the Early New Testament church. Though the bible provides a very brief note about her, her influence over Timothy makes her a model for motherhood.
Meaning of Name:
The name Eunice has two parts. Eu stands for Joy or goodness. Nice stands for victory. Hence, her name means Joyous Victory.
Timothy:
Timothy was born to parents of a mixed racial marriage. Paul writes about Lois, the mother of Eunice and grandmother of Timothy. Both women were influential in the life of Timothy. (II Timothy 1:4,5; Acts 16:1-2) Timothy becomes a trustworthy assistant, associate, and ambassador of Paul. Timothy is addressed as ‘my true child in faith.’ (I Timothy 1:2)
Home schooling
Paul had the privilege of being trained in Law and Scripture under a famous teacher, Gamaliel. However, Timothy did not have such an opportunity to be trained under a Rabbi. Nevertheless, Timothy had a different kind of training at home. (2 Timothy 1:4,5; 3:14,15)
Curriculum:
First, the Jewish women knew the Book of Proverbs: Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6) Eunice and Lois trained Timothy to read and write the Hebrew and Greek languages. The linguistic training helped Timothy to study the Scripture.
Second, teaching was based on the Law of Moses. Both women taught the Holy Scripture and the sacred writings. “You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 6:7) Thus, they laid a strong foundation for Timothy to become a wise man based on Scripture.
Third, they modelled and passed on their sincere faith to Timothy. It was not a theoretical faith, or formula or a ritual, but a dynamic faith that leads to obedience and to fulfil the purpose of God.
