A young father came to a counselor. He was expecting a boy to be born, but a girl was born. His expectation was based on the prophecy by a Self-proclaimed prophet. Unable to accept the girl, he went into depression and needed help. Another so-called prophet prayed for a paralyzed man and promised that he would walk around and go to the church to worship the Lord. Sadly, the very next day he died. The prophet said, his prophecy has double application, the paralyzed man is walking around in heaven. Like an apple a day keeps the doctor away: A prophecy a day, keeps the Satan away.
Spiritual anemia: When there is not enough blood in the physical body, there is tiredness, drowsiness, and vulnerability to infection. In the same way, those who lack spiritual strength are vulnerable to the manipulation of false prophets. Those who do not have a renewed mind, based on the Word of God, will seek solace from false prophets. (Romans 12:2)
Mediators: In many countries, a middleman is required to get work done with the government. People who are used to this system think they need a middleman to negotiate with God. Hence, they search for prophets, preachers, pastors, and living or dead saints to play the role of mediator. Paul warns that only one meditator exists between God and humans, the Lord Jesus Christ. (I Timothy 2:5)
Outsourcing: the hard tasks are outsourced to those who offer services. Food could be outsourced, and managing an event could be outsourced. Sadly, some think prayers, petitions, and intercession could be outsourced. Hence, they look for easy spiritual service providers and end up in the clutches of a false prophet.
Spiritual discernment: When Paul went to preach in the city of Berea, the devout Jews living there did not just believe him. They searched the scripture to confirm if what Paul was preaching was per the Old Testament. (Acts 17:11) Many believers lack spiritual discernment, as they do not have a daily discipline of reading, meditating, and applying the bible.
Do I discern the right ministers of the Word?
