The person who owned the field was so lazy that it impacted his field as well as his personal life. (Proverbs 24:30-32) We can be lazy physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Thorns: Thorns and Thistles are the result of the curse on humanity due to the Fall of Adam and Eve. (Genesis 3:18) A disciple’s life would be encroached upon by thorns and thistles if they are not diligent and watchful. Thorns are the worries of life and the deceitfulness of riches. (Matthew 13:22) Instead of working and doing God’s will, just worrying will not bring any result.
Weeds: At night, the enemy plants weeds in between the wheat. (Matthew 13:24-30) Some weeds could grow by themselves. Weeds suck the best minerals and water from the soil that is needed for the wheat to grow, thus impoverishing them. Careless farmers see overgrown weeds, overwhelming the real plants of grain. The yield of the crops would be drastically reduced or lost.
Broken walls: Broken walls indicate that the stray animals could walk and eat the crops. Thieves could get in and take the harvest. Broken walls invite the intruders. Nehemiah considered the city of Jerusalem without walls as a disgrace and without security. (Nehemiah 1:3)
Poverty: Poverty will come upon such negligent owners like a thief. Poverty is not because of a lack of land or opportunities or resources, or skills. It is just because of laziness. A sluggard gives excuses that a lion is on the road, and considers himself wise. (Proverbs 22:13; 26:13-16) Poverty is not due to the lack of opportunities, assets, capabilities, gifts, or skills. They chase fantasies and only talk, hence plunging into poverty. (Proverbs 28:19; 14:23)
Scarcity: “Sluggards do not plow in season; so, at harvest time they look but find nothing.” (Proverbs 20:4) In a world where consumer items are in plenty, there is a lack of real food, the Word of God. There is a famine for the Word of God. (Amos 8:11)
Am I lazy or diligent and fervent in the Lord?
