Foolish Ideas

The Five Foolish Virgins had foolish ideas that led to their foolish unpreparedness and futile efforts. (Matthew 25:1-13) Like those five, many become foolish for a variety of reasons.
Trendy: The foolish virgins wanted to be trendy, with modern fashion. Carrying a can of oil would make them ashamed and a target of jokes. Forgetting their purpose of the task or mission, they were more self-conscious about their looks, attractiveness, and being trendy.
Lazy: Some are lazy; they do not like to carry heavy loads. To reduce weight, they probably decided to leave the can of oil. Laziness is the enemy of stewardship. Good stewards are smart workers and are purposefully busy with the tasks assigned to them.
Less knowledge: They perhaps did not understand the wedding ceremony, the importance of the virgins being present, and the preparation that goes into the arrival of the bridegroom. For them, it was just a picnic or excursion, hence no preparation.
Lethargic: Even if they know the purpose and meaning of the event, they are lethargic about it. They were busy with other aspects and did not give priority to this preparation. A disciple cannot be a good disciple if s/he does not have the skill to discern the priorities and right values. (Matthew 6:33)
Jugaad: In Indian culture, there is a term, jugaad. It is solving problems innovatively at the last minute. However, the innovation may not be legitimate, appropriate, or permanent. There are more failures than successes.
Wrong thought: In their hearts, the foolish virgins must have thought that the other five were fools, as they had an elaborate preparation. Fools think they are wise in their own eyes. (Proverbs 12:15)
Surplus and Scarcity: Dealing with surplus is easier than with scarcity. It was easy to give away or leave the additional oil, instead of not carrying the required oil.
Fools perish: Those who consider the Gospel message of the cross as foolishness will perish in their foolishness. (I Corinthians 1:18)
Do I seek wisdom from His Word or follow the foolishness of this world?
