Great Potential, but a Great Disaster

There are many talented, gifted, and with the right attitude. The potential for their growth, progress, and contribution is enormous. They show a lot of promise. Nevertheless, they do not measure up to their promise. Sadly, King Solomon was one among them. Nehemiah writes: “Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations, there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin.” (Nehemiah 13:26)
Intellectual: Solomon had great wisdom, gifted by God in response to his prayers. The way he judged, and wrote poetry, proverbs, and other literature is evidence for his knowledge.
Spiritual: Nehemiah states that Solomon was God’s beloved. God was gracious, generous, and loving towards him. However, Solomon did not reciprocate the love of God, instead showed his love to his many wives, who were of foreign origin and did not know or love the Lord. Solomon built the enormous Temple in Jerusalem which, David desired to build.
Political: Solomon experienced political stability and peace, unlike his father’s reign. It was certainly, God’s doing and gift. In the era of peace, he could provide growth in the economy, and build palaces for himself and his wives.
Administration: His administration was different and was effective. In the Kingdom of Unified, there was trade and a great exchange of goods and ideas.
Economy: Solomon had a flourishing economy. All the vessels he used in his palace and of the forest guest house were gold. During Solomon’s days, silver was not considered anything. (I Kings 10:21)
Reputation: His reputation spread around the world. The Queen of Sheba came to visit Solomon hearing about the glory of the reign of Solomon. (I Kings 10:1-13) She brought great gifts and stayed in Jerusalem for about six months learning from Solomon.
Marriage: Solomon neglected the truth that marriage is a sacred covenant. He made it as a tool of political alliance that led to his downfall.
Am I vigilant against all pitfalls?
