Walter and Helen Jespersen were serving as missionaries in China. The Communists had taken over; the soldiers were living in the same building. It was a time when all church services were stopped. A few Christians were already executed publicly. There was no contact with other Christian friends, especially the Chinese believers. It was Christmas in the year 1950. Walter became discouraged, then he turned on his old wind-up phonograph and played Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. The house echoed: “He shall reign forever and forever; King of kings and Lord of Lords – hallelujah!” Walter, Helen, and their four children’s spirits were lifted to rejoicing in their victorious and reigning Lord. They read Luke chapter two together.
God reigns: Each day, the world is becoming more dangerous with wars, disasters, rioting, looting, lynching, coups, terrorism, bomb explosions, etc. The news is discouraging, depressing, and disturbing. These are facts, but the Bible gives the ultimate truth: Our God reigns. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Psalms 93:1-2; 97:1-5; Revelation 17:14) Though it is not a conducive and favourable situation, God reigns, seated on the throne with ultimate authority.
Songs of Glory: In times of depressing moods, songs could lift the spirits. Praise God for the saints who have gone through such valleys of death and could triumphantly sing. Their experiences as poetry, songs, and hymns that minister to those who go through difficult times.
Spirit of Glory: A great number of Christians celebrate Christmas in the difficult context of persecution, being in refugee camps, fearing for their lives, and even in prisons. Yet, the Spirit of Glory rests on those suffering Christians. (I Peter 4:14)
Affirmation of faith: By singing, with the saints and angels, believers affirm their faith, gloriously. The Psalmist talks to himself, asking why his soul is downcast. Then he praises the Lord, remembers His salvation, and joins the throng who praise Him in his spirit. (Psalms 42:5-6)
The joy of Christmas: The joy is not about new clothing, stars, trees, nativity scenes, Santa Claus, cakes, feasts, and festivals, but in HIM.
Do I see Jesus as the Lord of Lords and King of Kings?
