Inspector General of Prison in Philippi

In the city of Philippi, Paul was irritated by a demon-possessed slave girl. She publicly cried daily, seeing Paul stating: Servants of the Most-High God. That girl used to tell fortunes and earn money that went to her masters. When Paul rebuked the evil spirit, the girl became free. But her masters lost their source of income. So, they engineered a riot, and as a result, Paul and Silas were thrown in prison. (Acts 16:22-40)
Law enforcer: The unnamed Roam official was stern and rigid. The Roman Empire was considered to be the best administered in terms of Law and Order of that time. As a Roman soldier, he focused on duty, implemented law and order, and punished criminals using harsh methods like stocks (a wooden or metal frame that locks a person’s feet, immobilising them) for prisoners.
Honourable officer: There was an earthquake, and prisoners may escape. If prisoners escape, the Jailer is accountable. For inquiry, he should go to Rome, where he could be given a death sentence. Instead of facing such humiliation, he wanted to commit suicide. Paul, knowing the Roman laws and psychology of Roman officials, cried out to the jailer, not to take his life.
Reflection: Jailer could think about what happened the previous night. Must have listened to the praises of Paul and Silas. He understood the earthquake had a message for him. Paul and Silas, the prisoners, did not take advantage of the chaos and open prison. Instead, they stayed to protect the honour of the Jailer. Thus, he could frame the right question.
Search for truth: The earthquake jolted the things around him. Paul’s attitude and behaviour shook him inside. In fear and awe, he asked a profound question: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30).
Saving faith: When Paul called him to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. He responded with faith. He testified to his household – family members, relatives and servants who lived with him.
Obedience: Jailer took baptism along with his household, demonstrating obedience, according to his newfound faith.
