A 34-year-old married man lost his life to suicide. He was facing nine false cases including charges of murder, and dowry demands. His wife demanded rupees 30 million (3 crores) as settlement and he was paying rupees forty thousand a month for the upkeep of the child, while she was earning an equal amount of salary. Facing ridicule by the judge who laughed, wife who taunted: Are you not dead yet? attended 120 summons to court, was asked to pay bribes, and traveled 40 times from his hometown to another city to attend court. With ‘Justice is Due,’ pasted on his chest, he hung himself. Before his death, he posted a one-and-a-half-hour video explaining his ordeal and what he expects as justice. (NDTV 10 December 2024) They turned justice into wormwood and laid the righteous to rest. (Amos 5:7) That means people turned the sweet justice into bitter harassment, exploitation, and oppression.
Wormwood: A plant in Palestine is known for its bitter taste. Instead of righteousness, justice, and peace: it is wormwood of poison, disaster, and destruction.
Dowry demon: Generally, it is a society-sanctioned social evil to demand a dowry from the bride’s family. Incompetent and Unethical grooms and their families make the life of a bride’s family bitter. Hence, a law was enacted to protect the girl and the family. Nonetheless, the same law has been turned into a weapon-dowry demon, for filing false cases against husbands.
Judicial corruption: Those who should pronounce judgment are greedy and try to extract bribes for dispensing righteous judgment. Innocents are harassed. Felix wanted a bribe and left Paul in prison for many years. (Acts 24:7) The Bible warns that bribery blinds the wise and twists the words of the righteous. (Deuteronomy 16:19) Even discerning judges become blind. Righteous judges could twist their judgment when they get bribes. Justice was delayed by postponing the hearing dates, 120 times. How much is human cost and money?
Justice is due: Plunging into depression, the man committed suicide, which is not a solution at all.
