Near a Reserved lounge in an airport, one helper was lamenting. “This fellow is a billionaire. He demands service right from entering the airport until he boards. He leaves the least coins, that are not even worth purchasing a cup of tea from the street shop. Beggarly attitude.” The Bible teaches: “He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.” (Psalm 112:9)
Possessed by possessions: One monkey saw nuts in a jar. It put its hand inside and grabbed as much as it could but could not pull out the hand. If it takes just one or two nuts, the hand could come out. But the monkey wanted the whole lot. In the same way, rich people want to grab as much as possible but are harmed in that process. Unable to part with their possessions, people could be left behind in His Second Coming. Remember Lot’s wife. (Luke 17:32)
Pride of privilege: Some people are boastful of their privilege of being rich or belonging to the upper classes or castes. For them, it is their God-given privilege, prestige, and prosperity to enjoy, and need not be remorseful for not sharing with the poor.
Tight-fisted: The Bible warns that people of God should not be tight-fisted and hard-hearted towards the poor. (Deuteronomy 15:7) Pride of privilege, boosts a person’s ego, which results in selfishness. That makes them hard-hearted towards others, especially the poor.
Sell and give: The rich man was admonished by the Lord, to sell the wealth he had, distribute it to the poor, and then take up the cross to follow Him. (Matthew 19:21) Probably, he could have been willing to sell the riches but had difficulty in sharing with the poor. The rich think only they deserve riches and wealth, and the poor do not deserve it. Giving to the poor means giving to the undeserved, that too his inheritance and hard-earned money.
Spiritual attitude: One preacher said: “You should repent, and so should your wallet.”
Do I realize being generous to the poor is a spiritual attitude?
