In the modern world, lifelong learning has become a buzzword, trend, and fashion. The technology changes fast, and skills are needed to handle the newer ones. Hence, a person must learn throughout their life. But lifelong learning is a call and commitment for a disciple. Learning noble, holy, righteous, and good aspects should be a daily habit.
Word: The Bible must be learnt and studied daily. (Acts 17:11) God’s Word should always be meditated on, day and night. (Psalm 1:1-3) It is a daily discipline and habit of a believer.
Holy Spirit: The Lord Jesus Christ taught His disciples that the Holy Spirit is a comforter and teacher. The Holy Spirit will bring to remembrance what the Lord taught them. (John 14:25-26) When disciples read the Bible and store it in their hearts, the Holy Spirit helps their minds to retrieve it whenever it is needed. Psalmist writes: In your light we see light. (Psalm 36:9) The Spirit of God gives wisdom to understand the Scripture.
Context: God places the disciples in different contexts. Some are good, pleasing, while others could be hard. Nevertheless, God shapes a person to become his useful vessel in such situations. Joseph was trained by God’s sovereign plan in the house of Potiphar and prison to serve the Egyptian Empire.
Others: A disciple should be willing to learn from all sources God connects. Philip was with the Ethiopian eunuch who was reading the Book of Isaiah. He said: How can I understand unless someone taught me? (Acts 8:31) Philip learnt a strategy for gospel communication from a non-believer. Moses was willing to have Hobab as his eyes and ears. That means he was willing to have his brother-in-law as a guide in the wilderness. (Numbers 10:29) He also followed the advice of his father-in-law, Jethro. On his advice, he delegated his work to seventy other leaders. (Exodus 18:21)
History: There is a saying: “One who does not learn from history will repeat history.” Learning from happenings, events, organizations, biographies, and successful endeavours is essential for effective leadership.
Reading: Great leaders are great readers.
