Magnified Verse

Surinder Kaur was born in a devout Sikh family. Being a brilliant child, she got promoted ahead and studied along with her elder sister. When studying in school she understood Jesus Christ as one of the many gods. Along with her family members, she attended Sikh temple worship and joyfully partook in the langar – the communal meal.
Heard gospel: When her family moved to a new city as her father was transferred, it was difficult for her to adapt to the new situation. She writes: “In my struggle, I turned to all the gods I had worshiped throughout my childhood. I often ended up in the bathroom, where in solitude I prayed with tears to Guru Nanak, Allah, Rama, Jesus, and Sai Baba, begging them for help.” Later she contemplated committing suicide, seeing her struggle her father admitted the sibling girls to a boarding school. Anita, a senior studying there, shared the gospel, which Surinder resisted. However, her elder sister accepted the Lord.
Follower of Christ: The fear of failure made her reach out to Anita asking if Jesus could help her in exams. Anita said, yes, Jesus would if she did not cheat in exams. Surinder started reading the bible along with her school lessons for forty days. She writes: “My eyes were drawn to that magnified verse, John 14:6: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” From that day, she found a verse specially magnified for me. Surinder not only passed the exam but stood third in the college. She felt guilty of exploiting an almighty God for selfish gains. Then she confessed: “Though I started to follow you out of selfish ambition, today I tell you that henceforth, whether I pass or I fail, I will follow you.”
Book of life: She writes: “I had always been embarrassed by being called Surinder, a unisex Sikh name.” Lord said that her name is recorded in the Book of Life.” (Revelation 3:5)
Do I hear His voice when I read the Bible?
