One college student was a computer wizard. However, he was not good in other subjects. He hacked the college computer server and changed his grades. Nevertheless, he was caught and reprimanded. One bishop got elected by paying bribes to eligible voters willing to receive money, even though they were priests. Ambition and success are good. But the methods count. The bishop aspired for a high position, which is good as Paul wrote. (I Timothy 3:1) But both were motivated to achieve the goal and not bothered about their means and methods.
Distinct Process: There is a process for things to be done. Some are short and some are long. Cutting short the process to achieve the goal, could be illegitimate and immoral. Getting good grades is a good goal, but the process is to study hard, understand, and develop skills to express what is learned in the examination or assignments. Becoming a bishop gives a wider opportunity to serve and exert spiritual and social influence. But grabbing the position by paying money is like the sorcerer asking Peter to give the authority for the anointing of the Holy Spirit in exchange for money. (Acts 8:19)
Deceit: When a thing is done in an unethical manner, it is cheating. Satan is a deceiver, and all who use the method of deception, are imitating him without realizing it.
Damage: When methods are violated or abused, there would be damages. A bishop who could manipulate the system, mobilize people by indulging in malpractices, and get elected; is damaging the right opportunity for a more righteous person. Joab to retain his position as the army general had killed two more righteous people: Amasa and Abner. King David instructed Solomon to deal with Joab appropriately. (I Kings 2:5, II Samuel 20:7-9; II Samuel 3:27)
Diligence: God requires the disciples to be diligent, which includes honesty, integrity, reliability, trustworthiness, righteousness, and willingness to suffer for the sake of truth. Diligence in service and doing according to legitimate process and not diligence to usurp power and prestige.
Am I watchful of my motivations, means, and methods?
