A bizarre case of a foster family allegedly trying to “protect” a young woman from a suspected molester by locking her in a room since she was eight has come to light in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar after officials reached their home to rescue her from what had been her prison for two decades. The orphaned girl, now in her 20s, barely responds when her name is called, has severely impaired eyesight, and appears traumatised after years without exposure to sunlight, open air or social contact, said Sister Clarelit of Gharaunda Ashram at Korchuli near Jagdalpur. Bastar collector Harish S told TOI the social welfare dept is probing her forced confinement “as a case of potential criminal negligence, unlawful detention, and violation of human rights”. (5 December, Times of India) The intention of protection becomes imprisonment and slow death.
Darkness: Like this girl, humanity is imprisoned in spiritual darkness. False religions promise safety, security and salvation, but imprison a person. For those who live in darkness, the light has come through the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. (Matthew 4:16; Isaiah 9:2)
Set free: The officials from the government had to go and set free the girl who was in darkness. By her own efforts, she could not come out. Sadly, she did not even have a desire to get out. She did not have an idea about the free life outside. Her identity was destroyed, as she could not respond when her name was called out. Only the Saviour of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ, could set free those who are in bondage of sin, shame, guilt, powerlessness, and hopelessness. In the Nazareth synagogue, the Lord Jesus asserted He had come to set free the captives. (Luke 4:16-21)
Blind: Accustomed to darkness, her eyes lost the capacity, and she became blind. Spiritual darkness of immorality, hate, violence, and filthiness could blind the perspective of a person. Satan intentionally blinds people and imprisons them in the darkness so that they may not receive salvation. (II Corinthians 4:4)
