The United Nations has declared certain rights for all humans of all nations. Generally, it is known as Human Rights. Who gives these rights? Does the UN have the authority and power to confer rights to humans? Human rights are derived from the Bible, which God has accorded to humans, who are created in the image of God. Other living things are not created in the image of God; hence, they do not have rights as humans have. One of the accusations against the Israelites is that they do not defend the rights of the needy. (Jeremiah 5: 28)
Deny: Most religions deny any rights to humans. Either humans are under the whims and fancies of gods or under impersonal, fatalistic law, according to their philosophies. Hence, humans do not have any rights. Many political ideologies deprive citizens of their basic rights to gain absolute power over the nation.
Deprive: Some nations have a constitution that provides human rights, and they are signatories to the UN human rights commission. But in practice, citizens are deprived of their rights by subtle means. It could be misinterpreting the law, abuse of the law, or disregard for the law.
Deceive: Sadly, some people are deceived due to the lack of knowledge of the law or awareness about their rights. Hence, they become slaves to some vested interests or those who cleverly manipulate them. When there is no universal education, many people are illiterate, hence they do not know the law. Sometimes, laws are in an elitist language, and people do not know that language and are being deceived.
Defend: Disciples of the Lord are called to defend the rights of the needy. First, all humans need to know that God has given them the spiritual right to become a child of the living God. (John 1:12) Second, all humans should know that God has given the right to make choices, Free will to make decisions. Third, knowledge about the UN charter and the constitutions should be taught to all citizens.
Do I defend the rights of the poor, needy, marginalised, and deprived?
