Rise and Fall

Many Empires rose and fell, and so were smaller ones here and there. Prophet Daniel provides a glimpse of future global history when he interpreted the dream of Nebuchadnezzar: Babylon, Medes-Persian, Greece-Macedonian, and Roman Empires. (Daniel 2 & 7) Edward Gibbon a historian published six volumes: The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire from 1776-1788. The volumes cover the history from 98 to 1590 AD. Rigorous scholarship, historical perspective, and great literary style. However, his interpretations draw many lessons.
Decline of Freedom: The political, and intellectual freedom diminished, if not vanished. Healthy debates and dissensions became rarer. The philosophers, sensible senators, and orators disappeared. That set the Roman Empire in a downward spiral.
Lack of Civil Virtues: When there was affluence, people forgot their duty towards the nation, but focused on personal luxuries rather than the welfare of the community and Empire.
Decline of Moral values: The moral values declined and there was no trust. Family feuds, betrayal, and civil wars were the result. Added to that was a corrupt bureaucracy, where bribes dictated appointments, and promotions, depriving people of justice.
Political aspiration and extension: The Empire added more territories but could not effectively manage the conquered countries. Aspirational status and success made the Empire a victim of decadence. The capacity to govern declined as the territory extended. The military capability also could not match when there were rebellions and attacks by barbarians.
Incompetent rulers: The emperors and their coterie became corrupt, immoral, and selfish, and enjoyed riches and luxury with the least interest in governing or dispensing justice. When leaders do not fear God, instead think they are gods or enjoy divine status accorded by people, the leaders fail the nation miserably. If emperors are worthless, how could the bureaucracy give good governance or security forces do their duty?
Biblical principle: Righteousness exalts a nation. (Proverbs 14:24) Without the revealed Scripture, there is no righteousness. Only the fear of true living God provides wisdom to live for individuals, rules for the community, ethics for all activities, and Laws for the nation.
Do I pray for my nation to be righteous?
