When a doctor prescribes a CT scan, a patient is nervous. Several questions and doubts go through the mind. Yes, a medical investigation could give anxiety and even a panic attack. Spiritual scan by His Word and Spirit is essential for a healthy spiritual life. David writes: “You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinised me and found nothing wrong.” (Psalm 17:3) All believers should be able to make such a statement. Here are some questions for the test.
Disobedience: A Christian life is based on faith, trust, and obedience. Walking in obedience, in step with the Spirit of God, and in the Light of His Word is an absolute essential in the Christian Walk. (Galatians 5:25; Psalm 119:105) Disobedience is to choose spiritual darkness, groping, stumbling, and falling.
Selfish: Humans are mostly self-centred, as they are all sinners. Becoming God-centred, Kingdom-centred, and righteousness-centred is a radical change a disciple experiences. However, it is a struggle to overcome the desires of the self. Paul also went through this spiritual combat and came out triumphant. Hence, Paul writes that the self should be crucified. (Romans 6:6; Galatians 2:20)
Negligence: Another lack in spiritual life is negligence. It could be negligence of disciplines like bible reading, prayer, fellowship, testimony, negligence of God-given gifts, talents, and opportunities, also negligence in seeking God’s will, plan, and purpose. Laziness also leads to negligence of the vineyard, which would have walls broken and weeds overgrown. (Proverbs 24:30-34)
Correction: Spiritual lethargy and defeat come from a lack of listening and doing a course correction. Sheep have the tendency to go astray, so do the believers. (Isaiah 53:6) Humble believers seek the Scripture and course correct their lives. (II Timothy 3:15-17)
Priority: Another important test for a disciple is the priority test. God-fearing and God-honouring disciples will have the Kingdom of God as the priority and righteousness of God as the value system. (Matthew 6:33) They know the time of harvest, as the field is ready. Making disciples that bring joy in heaven is their priority.
