Ghana’s outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo unveiled a statue of himself during a tour of the country’s Western Region. The monument is intended to honor the development initiatives the president has overseen whilst in office. (BBC.com 7 November 2024) Self-glorification is the act of focusing on oneself, personal satisfaction and enjoyment, comfort, and legacy. There is neither room for God nor for others.
Glory to God: Humans are created to glorify God, not themselves. (Isaiah 43:7) Paul writes that a disciple should give glory to God in all things. He gives examples of eating and drinking. (I Corinthians 10:31) The lifestyle of a disciple is glorifying God or unceasing worship.
Blasphemy: When a person glorifies himself, he places himself above God. It is a form of idolatry as well as blasphemy. Sadly, mistakenly many believe that god is within themselves and would strive to realize that.
Stealing: Self-glorification is stealing what belongs to God. Finite humans should not aspire for attributes of an infinite, almighty, sovereign, holy, glorious God. Also, God spoke through Prophet Isaiah: “I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.” (Isaiah 42:8)
Creating a name: After the flood during the time of Noah, the descendants of Noah wanted to build a tower and city to glorify themselves by creating a name. However, God judged them by confusing their language at the Tower of Babel. (Genesis 11)
Self-appraisal: A Pharisee sought the attention of God by glorifying himself regarding his piety of prayer, fasting, and giving, comparing himself in contrast to a commoner. (Luke 18:10-14) However, the humble commoner went home justified before God.
Focus: Followers of the Lord are conscious and concerned about their stewardship. Hence, they focus on sharing the gospel, caring for the poor, seeking justice, influencing culture, and impacting the nations. God is glorified and the heavens rejoice when a sinner repents hearing the gospel. (Luke 15:10) Not self-absorption, but service to the poor is commendable in God’s sight. God loves justice; hence disciples facilitate justice in this world.
Have I overcome the temptation of self-glorification?
