Selfies and life jackets!

Reports detailed that the boating accident happened off the Sao Paulo coast, in the region known as Garganta do Diabo, which translates to Devil’s Throat. The partygoers were being transported back to land on a different vessel when that smaller boat was hit by a wave, knocking all seven people into the water. Two Brazilian women influencers aged 27 and 37 drowned after refusing to wear Life Jackets to take Selfies and for tanning, according to the boat’s caption. (People.com, 30 October 2024)
Devil’s Throat: Interestingly, this place was named Devil’s Throat as it was accident-prone due to unexpected currents that resulted in deaths. Satan is described as a roaming and roaring lion, ready to swallow those who are not alert, sober, and vigilant. (I Peter 5:8)
Life Jackets: The purpose of wearing a life jacket is for protection from injury and death. The duo refused to wear them leading to their deaths. Millions of people refuse the life-giving message of the gospel. Inordinately, when they refuse the gospel, they choose eternal death.
Selfie: They wanted to take selfies, without a life jacket. For them, it was a useless extra in life that could be dispensed with. Like them, people are driven by selfishness, and sinful pleasures, rather than in pursuit of salvation.
Tanning: By being directly exposed to the sun, they wanted to tan their skin, perhaps to enhance their beauty. Tragically, for them, external beauty was more important than their lives.
Whole Armor of God: For the believers, Paul advises to put on the full armor of God. (Ephesians 6: 10-18) This is not an option, but essential for all disciples. Refusing could lead to severe injury. The helmet of salvation, the breastplate or bullet-proof vest of righteousness, the belt of truth, the shield of faith for protection from the attack of fiery darts of the enemy, putting on shoes for the feet with the gospel of peace, and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God to attack and assault the enemy.
Have I put on the Whole Armor of God?
