Watching short snippets of videos or fast-forwarding through them makes people more bored rather than less, according to the results of seven experiments involving more than 1,200 people. Such “digital switching” is less edifying than sticking with one video and watching it all through. The participants found the longer viewing experience more satisfying, engaging, and meaningful than flipping through several videos. Smartphone use increases boredom and undermines enjoyment in social situations. (USnews.com 19 August 2024)
What is boredom? It is defined as an emotional or physical state due to a lack of mental stimulation or lack of interest in one’s surroundings. Disciples are gifted with sound minds and renewed minds and not empty minds. (II Timothy 1:7)
Boredom is sin: For the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, boredom is sin. First, they must guard against slothfulness, idleness, and laziness. (Proverbs 19:15; 6:6-11) Second, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop that could lead to all mischief. (I Timothy 5:13) Third, disciples ought to be always diligent and fervent for the Lord. (Colossians 3:23-24; Proverbs 22:29) Fourth, boredom lulls our mind or deviates from the calling, and fails to redeem the time. (Ephesians 5:16; James 4:14) Fifth, boredom is a devil’s lie that a human cannot be content. But Godliness with contentment is a great gain. (I Timothy 6:6) Sixth, Disciples with priority and purpose, also have a sense of urgency, no time for boredom. (Matthew 6:33)
How to combat boredom? First, is to take a spiritual evaluation. Some are lethargic and lukewarm which leads to boredom. (Revelation 3:15-16) Second, develop fervency for prayer, and hunger for the Word of God. Consider such seasons God-given for renewal of mind and revival of soul. Third, boring time should be alert time as Satan prowls to swallow ignorant victims. (I Peter 5:8) Four, make a list of activities to be done when bored: Read a book, clear your desk, shelf, and room, invite a friend for coffee time, try to cook a new dish, walk around singing, praying, and praising.
Do I rejoice in the Lord always? (Philippians 4:4)
