Most people were puzzled and even shocked to know the world’s first trillionaire, Elon Musk, lives in a 400-square-foot home in Texas. (NDTV, 13 June 2026) Some appreciate him, while others mock him as stingy or a miser. The Lord Jesus Christ said that he had no place to lay his head. (Luke 9:58) Sadly, many prosperity preachers and pastors live in mansions that neither show simplicity nor stewardship.
Simplicity over luxury: Elon Musk chose simplicity over luxury. Though he could afford a better, larger, posh home, he chose a simple home. A home is needed to rest, relax, renew, and recuperate. The size of the house does not determine these. “Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.” (Ecclesiastes 5:12)
Convenience over comfort: Some people give importance and priority to comfort. Others give importance to convenience. It is not how comfortable the house is; it is about how conveniently the house helps to accomplish purpose in life. The comfort of the house could make a person lazy, a demotivating factor. A convenient house motivates action.
Utility value or perception: Few people view the size of the house or its location as status symbols. Nevertheless, such houses neither guarantee peace nor prosperity. A few people live according to the perceptions, valuations, and endorsements of others. Such people harm themselves. Those who please God and walk before Him would be blessed.
Basic amenities: Generally, food and clothing are considered the minimum requirements of humans. (I Timothy 6:8) The disciples of the Lord do not live to eat but eat to live. For believers, God is the dwelling place and haven. (Psalm 91:1) Contentment is a cultivated habit of spiritual life.
Simple lifestyle: This cannot be defined for all believers from all around the world. Each person has to evaluate and learn to live within their means, serve well for His glory, be a responsible steward, and be generous in giving to all.
