Unite my Heart

David asks the Lord to unite his heart. (Psalm 86:11) It is an interesting and essential prayer. The human heart could be divided, distracted, disoriented, discouraged, and doubtful. Those who are steadfast in following the Lord, doing the will of God, and being a witness to the world are those who have a united heart. God expects a disciple’s heart to be united in the following five things.
Purposes: If the whole mind is not concentrated towards a purpose, then the goal cannot be achieved. Satan is cunning to divert a believer with cross-purposes, so that the ultimate plan is compromised or defeated. First, foremost, and urgent priority is the Kingdom of God, and the Righteousness of God. (Matthew 6:33)
Resolution: Daniel resolved in his heart or determined in his mind not to be spiritually defiled by the polluted food. (Daniel 1:8) Though a slave, he was unafraid of the emperor of a superpower of his time. Sadly, most New Year’s resolutions dry, decay, and fall like dead leaves within a matter of a few days.
Intentions: For humans, all his thoughts and intentions are pure and good. However, God weighs the heart to know the intentions and motivations of the heart. (Proverbs 16:2; 21:2) People’s actions could be displayed as a noble cause, and words could be sweet like honey, but the intention in the depth of the heart is weighed by God.
Decisions: Godly decisions are made in the heart. If the heart is divided, then there is indecisiveness. Many are at the crossroads, not knowing how to make the right decision. People of Israel were limping between two opinions, unable to decide whom to follow: Jehovah or Baal? (I Kings 18:21)
Affections: Loving God has to be from the whole heart, soul, body, and strength. (Matthew 22:37) Mammon is a challenge for this kind of love, and so are other aspects in this world. The intensity of loving God would be so great that love for human relatives, including spouse, parents, and children, would be considered as hate. (Luke 14:26)
