‘How long?’ This is a question or a groan a child of God experiences at one time or the other. At least it is used four times, indicating a strong and immediate desire for deliverance.
Presence of God: David could not feel or sense the presence of God. Has God forgotten him? God promises that he never forgets as a nursing woman who could never forgets her child. (Isaiah 49:14-16) Such feelings within a person make him think that God has forgotten him. It is just feelings, but not facts.
Handling feelings: There are three options. First, some wrongly ignore, boycott, and disregard feelings. Feelings are a gift from God. The gift that reminds us that humans are created in the image of God. Second, some become slaves of feelings. Though feelings are a gift of God, it is corrupted by sin. Hence, it is not possible to trust the feelings completely. Third, to surrender to God, the feelings, and the circumstances. God, who is Sovereign, personal, and loving, would make a new way for His children.
Self-counsel: David took counsel from his soul, which led him to more sorrow. There is no solution by looking inside oneself, but by looking outside towards God. The more a person thinks about a problem, the more depressed he becomes. One who prays more about his problem will experience peace and quietness.
Depression to enlightenment: David was depressed in three ways. In relationship with God, himself, and about his enemies. Though David felt forgotten by God, he called upon the Lord. It does not mean God is unwilling or reluctant; the waiting would lead him to greater spiritual maturity and victory. Hence, as David prayed, he was enlightened. Paul prayed for believers’ enlightenment and awakening from spiritual sleep. (Ephesians 1: 17-19; 5:14)
Enlightened vision: With enlightened eyes, David could see God’s goodness, His mercy. God had been bountiful and generous towards him. He could rejoice, sing, and singing increased his joy.
Have my spiritual eyes been enlightened?
