A simple disciple, who has not traveled beyond his village, became a global evangelist. He facing death, made a statement of faith that is evident in the song, which is sung all over the world. For suffering and persecuted Christians this song has become an Anthem for persecution. Like Paul, disciples should confess: that to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21) Simon Kama Marak sang that popular song: I have decided to follow Jesus (3 times); No turning back; no turning back. He was from the Garo tribe in the state of Meghalaya. This song was popularized by Billy Graham when he used it in his gospel campaigns. Later in most churches, it became a song in Baptism services.
No turning back:
“Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:61-62) A man wanted to follow the Lord, but could not detach from his connections. His umbilical cord was not cut. His decision was conditional, but the Lord demanded unconditional surrender.
Damage:
The farmer though not very educated will be steadfast in holding the plow to make rows straight and watch out for hindrances at the distance such as trees, fences, or boulders. Looking back, no farmer can plow a furrow straight.
Death:
Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19:26) She had two desires: to escape the disaster but be in the city of destruction. It is not possible to travel in two boats simultaneously. Elijah challenged the people of Israel. How long will they waver between two opinions? If they understand Jehovah as God, should completely surrender to Him. (I Kings 18:21)
Daily dying:
Disciples of the Lord are called to die daily, take up the cross, and follow Him. Willing to give themselves as living sacrifices unto the Lord. (Romans 12:1)
Can I sing: the No Turning Back chorus with a prayerful attitude?
