Buying and selling are natural activities among humans. It was barter, trade, gold coins, currencies, and online merchandise. The world economy cannot function without this process. The Bible also gives us counsel to buy and invest. “Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.” (Proverbs 23:23)
Buy Truth: Disciples are those who are willing to gain truth, at a cost. They should not forsake or reject it for a temporary profit. Buy is a command. Do it with pain, risk, and price. Holding the truth as martyrs did by laying down their lives, or willingly enduring torture and prison. It is a good gain and bargain; hence, truth should not be sold. It should not be sold like Esau did his firstborn right, foolishly. (Genesis 25:29-34) If it is sold, it cannot be repurchased.
Buy Wisdom: Those who lack wisdom should ask God. (James 1:5) Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. (Prove) Fear0) To buy means to ask with humility, with faith, and with earnest desire. God’s Word makes a person wiser than peers, teachers and elders. (Psalm 119:98-100) Students of the Bible are wise.
Buy Instruction: The Bible teaches children not to forsake the instructions of godly parents, god-honoring righteous parents. (Proverbs 1:8) Buying means to joyfully listen, which creates enthusiasm and encouragement for parents to give instructions. Listening is followed by remembering and doing according to the instructions at all times.
Buy Understanding: Prudence or understanding is applied wisdom. God’s wisdom is neither an empty philosophy nor impractical and complicated ideas. They are precepts and principles that could be applied in all human situations in the world. It means to seek the meaning of the Bible texts, meditate, renew the mind, and shape behaviour accordingly.
Invest for eternity: The Lord Jesus Christ taught His disciples to store treasures in heaven. (Matthew 6:20) While people invest for the future lives on earth, disciples invest for the Eternal Kingdom of God. With worldly riches, is it possible to gain eternal friends? (Luke 16:9)
Do I buy, invest according to God’s plan and purpose?
