Kurkure is a spiced crunchy puffcorn snack made up of rice, lentils, and corn. One woman leaves her husband after he forgets to get her the munchies. She was so addicted to this snack that she compelled her husband to buy it for her every day. One day he forgot, and that triggered a fight, which reached the court for a divorce. (Hindustan Times, 14 May 2024) Addiction and obsession with cheap chips drive the woman so crazy that she undervalues the institution of family and nullifies her relationship with her husband.
Hunger: All humans should feel hungry and should have food. But, when a certain food becomes an obsession, it is dangerous for both physical and spiritual health.
Cravings: A strong wanting that promises enjoyment or pleasure. Craving promises something. When a person craves food, he sees the food in reality, virtual reality, or imagination. The person imagines or fantasizes about the pleasure the food promises. A deep desire is birthed, and it is a matter of time before he is driven to get that food, and experience that promise is fulfilled.
Obsessions, addictions: Such strong desires could turn into obsessions that lead to excess consumption. (James 4:1-3) These cravings could be the ultimate pursuit and even purpose of life. Israel in the wilderness were not grateful for Manna, were craving to have meat, and for that, they were willing to go back into Egyptian slavery. (Exodus 17:1-7)
Boasting: For the wicked one boasts about his cravings; the one who is greedy curses and despises the Lord. (Psalms 10:3) Craving leads to boasts, curing others, and even blasphemy.
Gratefulness: When a person is not grateful for what God provides, then craves after temporal things that provide a short span of pleasure.
True hunger: Blessed are those who crave or hunger for righteousness, they will be filled. (Matthew 5:6) Humans do not live, survive, and find meaning with bread alone, but from the Word of God that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord. (Matthew 4:4)
Has a grateful heart kept me from cravings and terrible consequences?
