God’s Word, the Bible, is explained with metaphors. One of them is that His Word is compared with fire. (Jeremiah 23:29) God’s Word is powerful like fire. Fire signifies active, powerful, and has transformative qualities. As the fire could benefit, as well as damage, God’s word could punish and judge sinners.
Beneficial: Fire is very beneficial for humans. It could be used for cooking food, and even doing many constructive activities using technology and gadgets. Fire gives warmth and comfort, especially during harsh weather.
Chaff: Against fire, chaff has no power. It will be consumed. God is a consuming fire, and those who willfully sin, continue to sin, and join ranks with Satan will be consumed or judged by God. (Hebrews 12:29)
Warn and punish: Fire, if not handled wisely, could cause burns and pain. The Word of God is not for private interpretation. (II Peter 1:20) Misinterpretation or adding or removing parts would invite divine wrath, including plague and death. (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19)
Melt and break: Word of God has the power to break the hardened and melt the stubborn hearts. So that humans have a contrite heart and receive His word obediently in faith.
Refine: The Word of God refines, as fire refines gold. It also consumes impurity, including what is false, unrighteous, and un-Christlike. The Word of God tested Joseph’s faith and character, as he underwent slavery and imprisonment, and the prophetic dreams revealed to him were fulfilled. (Psalm 105:19)
Illuminates: The fire provides light, it exposes sin, darkness, curse, foolishness and ignorance. The gospel had illuminated communities, societies, and nations, transforming them from ignorance, darkness, superstitions and blind faith. The Bible helps and guides believers in the righteous path.
Zeal: The Word of God provides fervency, passion and zeal for believers. They become unstoppable, transforming the lives of others, context, community and nations. Jeremiah wrote that the Word of God was like fire in his bones. (Jeremiah 20:9) Fervent prayers, passionate preaching, and zealous proclamation of truth mark the bible understanding believers.
Is the Word of God like fire in my bones?
