“Two brothers, under the influence of alcohol, strangled their own brother over a dispute about bringing chicken home.” (NDTV 17 November 2024) For these two brothers the life of the chicken was more valuable than the life of their brother.
In and out: Some people think eating non-vegetarian food defiles a person. The brothers also thought that they had killed their brother. However, The Lord Jesus Christ taught how a person is defiled. “Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” (Matthew 15:10-11)
Heart and thoughts: The kind of words that come out of a person defiles a person. The words are connected to the heart, as well as the mind. The heart is the seat of emotions. If the emotions are negative, the words would be negative. If the heart is pure, the words also will be pure. The words are also expressions of thoughts. If the thoughts are not pure and holy, the words would be defiled.
Unique: Some people believe that all lives are equal. That is all living beings are equal: worms, reptiles, birds, mammals, fish, creeping things, and animals. But the Bible gives us the true creation story. The other living things like animals and birds were created by the Word of God. Adam was created from dust, and God blew life in his nostrils so that he became a living soul. Humans are the crown of God’s creation and cannot be equated with other living things.
Hypocrisy: All three brothers were addicted to alcohol and drugs. For them, this addiction was not a sin. However, eating non-vegetarian food at home was a taboo for them. The brothers could go out and eat in another person’s home or in a restaurant, that was not considered a sin.
Addiction: The alcoholic addiction numbed their already foolish mind and could not reason well. Hence, they became murderers. Direct addictions to the mind, like pornography, can make people adulterers.
