Sadly, there is news about infants and children falling into unused borewells. From the depths, they shout and scream. Some children are brought out alive by diligent efforts of relief workers, but others die in desperation. Humans also feel as if they are at their lowest, crying for relief. Psalmists also felt like that, crying from the depths of the earth or depths of the grave. (Psalms 71:20; 86:13)
Depth of poverty: Because of poverty, many people suffer hunger pangs – gnawing, twisting, and gurgling in the stomach. They are forced to beg or eat wild vegetation, and sometimes such food poisons them to death. Many children are malnourished due to a lack of food. Also, without education, they are stuck in the cycle of poverty.
Depth of sorrow: In the world, all experience sorrow and grief. The near and dear ones die, and that causes deep sorrow. Lord Jesus Christ empathized with Mary and Martha when Lazarus was dead. Jesus Wept. (John 11:35) People are maimed in accidents and lose their homes to natural disasters, and livelihoods due to disruptive technology or pandemic.
Depth of confusion: There are tough times when tough decisions are needed. It is difficult to understand complex situations, which would lead to confusion. Choosing a career or life partner could create stress, without clear understanding.
Depth of pain: Some sicknesses, injuries, hurts, and accidents could bring immense pain to the body. Other factors like rejection, abandonment, and hatred bring emotional pain.
Depth of doubt: Peter when he walked on the water, began with faith. Later when he doubted, he plunged into the depths of the sea.
Depth of guilt: Sin produces guilt. (Psalms 130:3) Spiritual awareness of the Holy God could make a person reach the bottom, the depth of guilt and receive healing.
Self-Help or Savior? There is no self-help kit or tool. A guilty person finds the need for a Savior, and by His grace gets the help of the Savior. Those who believe in the Lord and call upon His name will be saved. (Romans 10:13)
