Prayer for those in authority

Paul writes that prayer is a priority. He uses the terms supplication (specific request), prayer (generic term that includes all conversation with God, Intercession (praying on behalf of), and Thanksgiving for all men. Then he requests that Christians should be praying for those in authority, which includes elected political leaders, bureaucrats, and judges. (I Timothy 2:1-2) Tertullian, a Church Father, writes: “We pray for all the emperors, that God may grant them long life, a secure government, a prosperous family, vigorous troops, a faithful senate, an obedient people; that the whole world may be in peace; and that God may grant, both to Caesar and to every man, the accomplishment of their just desires.”

Wisdom the leaders need divine wisdom that is from above. “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17)

Discernment they need to discern what is good, appropriate, and timely. Delayed decisions could be harmful.

Unity rulers should ensure social peace, unity, and harmony. They should not allow polarization and fights. They should also have good relationships with neighboring states and countries.

Justice Government leaders should ensure justice for all people irrespective of their social or economic status.

Righteousness Their rule should demonstrate righteousness, morality, and ethics. Immoral things should not get legal protection.

Protection Christians should pray for the protection of the leaders from sickness, danger, and assassination attempts.

Godliness The leaders should ensure godliness and orderly and disciplined behavior of citizens in private, as well as in public.

Dignity All citizens should experience dignity.

Plan and purpose “The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.” (Psalm 33:10-11)

Spiritual protection the leaders may understand the spiritual forces of darkness that try to influence them and be protected through prayer and spiritual warfare.
