Self-care is a sacred duty

A young pastor in his thirties died of massive cardiac arrest. He did not take care of himself. Lack of discipline in his food habits, sleeping time, physical activities, and much time spent with a smartphone. Sadly, many people do not understand the teachings of the Bible. Paul writes: “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.” (I Corinthians 3:16-17)
Physical health: Neglecting physical health with a lethargic attitude or super spiritual ideas is dangerous. It is required to have some physical exercise, certain hours of sleep, and balanced food consumption. Yes, some work demands extra hours or night duty and emergency. That must be adjusted within a week’s timeframe. Certain times, sacrifice is required for the sake of the Kingdom of God or family welfare.
Emotional: Some people are not concerned about their emotional well-being. Some are short-tempered, unable to forgive others, show patience, and do not desire peace. Hence, their relationships are damaged and that leads to mental tension and stress. “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. (Proverbs 16:32)
Mental: Another aspect is to grow in knowledge, understanding, and prudence. Many do not gain knowledge and are stagnant. Thus, they are unable to mature as they grow older, and are childish in their decisions. Instead of learning from their life experiences, they keep repeating the same mistakes. In their profession skills also lag, which makes them irrelevant in the world. Reading books, and journals, and listening to experts are good ways to grow.
Spiritual: Disciples should grow daily in the knowledge of the Word of God. A blessed person meditates the Word of God, day, and night. Praising God, praying without ceasing, prioritizing the Kingdom of God, discerning, and doing God’s will in all situations are spiritual Progress.
