Henry Ford said: “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.” Satan has blinded the minds of all humans. (II Corinthians 4:4) When the gospel light shines on a person, the mind is opened to see the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. The mind of a Christian though open, should continue to have the discipline of thinking, reflecting, and meditating. Paul exhorts to think. (II Timothy 2:7) Among all religions, Christian faith engages the mind, while other spirituality deprives or silences or empties the mind. Sadly, many Christians are spiritually busy but intellectually lazy.
Love the Lord: The Lord taught His disciples to love the Lord with all heart, soul, and mind as the first commandment. (Matthew 22:37) It is not just emotional love, without a mental framework.
Sing with understanding: Paul writes to the believers in the city of Corinth to worship the Lord appropriately. They have sung unto the Lord in the Spirit and also with understanding. (I Corinthians 14:15) It is not an expression of blind faith, but intellectual faith that is based and inspired by the Truth – the Lord.
Renewed mind: Paul calls his readers to renew their minds. (Romans 12:2) A renewed mind does neither follow the trends nor the traditions of the world, but the Truth.
Meditate: Christian meditation is thinking, reflecting, and digesting the Word of God. It is a 24/7 action. Unlike other meditations, where the minds are emptied, Christian meditation is the active involvement of the mind. Christian faith is not a mindless faith.
Explain your faith: The world is puzzled by the lifestyle of a Christian. They like to know the reason for the faith from the believers. Hence, Apostle Peter exhorts disciples to be always ready to explain, define, or give answers to the quest and questions of the non-believers. (I Peter 3:15)
The paradigm for thinking: Paul provides a paradigm for Christian thinking: Whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of wisdom. (Philippians 4:8)
Am I a thinking, understanding, and explaining Christian?
