Apostolic ministries today
Some people designate themselves as Apostles. But a few others oppose this, stating apostles existed only in the first century. When we study the New Testament, there are certain qualities of an Apostle. There is a great need for apostolic ministry today also.
Preaching to unbelievers Apostles are ardent and obedient to preach the gospel to all people, as commanded by the Lord, which is known as the Great Commission. (Matthew 28:18-20)
Teaching new disciples The Lord included teaching new disciples as part of the Great Commission. Regularly, systematically, and consistently, the Word of God should be taught to new followers of the Lord. For apostles, it is a delightful and diligent task.
Planting churches Apostles gathered new believers and made them into a community of loving brothers and sisters. Thus, the congregation became the family of God and the local expression of the Body of Christ.
Developing elders and leaders For a healthy local church, there is a need for healthy local leaders to guide, teach, and lead. Paul and Barnabas had this vision and also the gift of discernment to find the right leaders and ordain them. (Acts 14:23) Paul trained leaders and deputed them to do ministry in various places, sometimes as his representatives. Paul challenged his leaders to train reliable people who could train others. (II Timothy 2:2)
Caring and communicating with the new churches: Paul wrote that the burden of the churches was upon him. He was concerned about the health of the church, doctrinal steadfastness, unity, missional vision, and diligent leaders. (II Corinthians 11:28) Paul cared for the churches by writing letters to them.
Partnership with new churches Paul connected the churches. They were not stand-alone or lonely churches. Paul writes that he robbed (got help or sponsorship) other churches to serve the church in the city of Corinth. (II Corinthians 11:8) The church in Philippi supported Paul in his ministry, as he travelled preaching the gospel and planting churches. (Philippians 4:18)
