Some signs declare that some areas are dangerous. Wise people read such signs and take precautions. Fools rush into it and get harmed. David was foolish to rush into the sin of adultery with Bathsheba. (II Samuel 11 & 12)
Isolation and loneliness: David was not leading from the front as usual. He delegated the war to his trusted lieutenant, Joab. Without his companions, he should have spent his time with his wives, sons and daughters. It seems he was alone, roaming on his terrace.
Power: David has experienced power, and it has increased every day. Without constant pressures from outside, King Saul’s family members have been rendered powerless; David experienced absolute power over the nation. Lord Emirich Edward Action said: “Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Unguarded moment: Spiritual life is to be on guard always. There can never be unguarded moments, relaxed moments or not alert. His spiritual senses were blurred by his emotional response. The lust of eyes, the lust of flesh, and the pride of life overwhelmed him.
Flee away: Timothy was a young leader, taking on greater responsibilities. “So, flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” (II Timothy 2:22) Fleeing from sin, the place of sin, the act of sin, and the context of sin is essential. Joseph ran away.
Pursue: The best way to flee from sin is to pursue spiritual things. Paul gives four aspects: First, righteousness, which is being cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ and being reconciled with God. Second, faith, which is the foundation of a person’s spiritual life. Faith in His grace, His Scripture, and His Spirit. Third, there is love, the Agape love, which sacrifices for others, does not demand from others. Four, is peace, which is a gift of the Prince of Peace. A person of peace hates sin and evil.
Fellowship: Paul reminds Timothy that his spiritual pursuit is with the saints who have a pure heart. It is not a lonely warfare, but with other people of God.
