Walt studied only up to sixth grade. But he had a desire to serve the Lord. He approached his pastor to teach in the Sunday School. The pastor said, “Go to the community, find boys, they are your class.” He went and picked up the boys, calling them to play with marbles with him. He got 13 boys and taught them the Bible. Eleven of them are in full-time ministry. One among them is Dr Howard G. Hendricks, a renowned professor at Dallas Theological Seminary who mentored and inspired thousands of people around the world.
Faithful: God uses diligent, faithful, and who have a burden to share the gospel. (Proverbs 22:29) Those who do this great ministry of sharing the gospel will stand before the King of Kings to receive a reward. (Proverbs 22:29) Walt has concern for those who do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior.
Available: Walt made himself available to the Lord. Hence, he went to the pastor, offering his services to teach the children. Though he did not have much education, he had the eagerness, availability, and willingness to do, and learn as he did. God looks for people who are available to do His service.
Teachable: God uses people who are teachable. A disciple is a life-long learner. Those who are heavily laden with the burden of sin, guilt, weary, and shame are invited by the Lord. He asks them to exchange their heavy burden with a yoke that is light and learn from Him. (Matthew 11:28-30) They could receive rest and peace, and instruction to become like Him.
Humble and Obedient: When the pastor requested him to go and find boys to teach, he was humble to go and recruit boys. He was humble to play with the kids who were like his children. He genuinely loved them. He was obedient to the call and taught the children faithfully for many years. His mentoring transformed a bunch of boys from poor homes to accomplish great things and because missionaries, pastors and seminary teachers.
Do I mentor young people to help them do God’s will in their lives?
