An elderly man was waiting at his home gate in the early morning. When the teenager came with the Newspaper, he stopped him. He said; “Please ring the doorbell, and hand over the paper every day to me.” The boy said: “Sir, to save time, I put a rubber band and throw the paper through windows, balconies, or doors. Stopping my bicycle, ringing the door, and waiting for you to hand it over takes a lot of time.” The senior citizen, who had lost his wife, held the hand of the boy trying not to shed tears and said: “Please do this. I will pay you extra. The day I do not come, call my relatives stating I am no more. You will be the only human I will be seeing each day.”
Lonely: There are many lonely people like this well-educated, wealthy man, living alone. They long for the human touch to see, talk, and shake hands with. Zoom calls, video WhatsApp calls, and other methods of communication do not satisfy them. Apostle John, probably in the nineties, was fed up communicating with ink and pen and wanted to meet people face to face. (II John 1:12)
Longing: Humans always love to relate to others. They need to have a sense of belonging. Without that, they feel rejected, and even abandoned by the whole world or humanity.
Listen: Like this senior citizen, there are many who love to listen to the knock at the door or doorbell ring. That makes them rejoice, for someone remembers or recognizes them.
Loving knock: King of Kings and Lord of Lord says: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20) There is no need to pay Him to knock at the door of our heart and mind. However, multitudes are deaf to this knock or ignore or reject the loving knock. This is not to give a feeling a person is alive but to give Eternal Life.
Have I opened my door for His gentle knock?
