Greater than John the Baptist?

This is an amazing verse: “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he” (Matthew 11:11). John the Baptist was greatest of the order of Old Covenant based on Mosaic Law. His greatness is validated by Lord Jesus Christ Himself. John was steady, not shaken by the wind. As prophet, he was messenger sent ahead to prepare the Way of the Lord. He was special, greater than anyone who are born on this earth. Yet, he cannot be compared with the believers of New Gospel order or New Covenant. Even the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than John the Baptist.

It is not about ranking and stature of John the Baptist. It is about a believers standing in God’s presence by His grace and also the mission or task assigned to believers.

1) More than prophet: John the Baptist was for a special purpose. All believers are more than prophets, they are witnesses. (Acts 1:8) The indwelling presence of Holy Spirit is a gift for the New Testament saints. Prophets in the Old Covenant order did not have indwelling presence, just anointed for certain seasons.

2) Messenger: Prophets generally gave messages of warning, rebuke and even judgement. Kingdom believers are called to proclaim ‘Shalom’ and the good news of the Lord. Calling people to repentance and reconciliation with God the Father. (II Corinthians 5:18)

3) Make Way: Lord’s disciples are called to prepare way for the Second Coming of the Lord. John prepared for His first coming as incarnation and saviour of the world. The New Covenant believers are called to prepare hearts and minds of the people for His Coming.

Sadly, many believers do not understand their standing and calling as many pastors and teachers have reduced them like birds with broken wings that cannot fly.

Have I understood my call and mission in this world?
