Bruised Reed

All humans go through moments of struggle, sickness, uncertainty, despair, worry, and stress. Some even give up, while others are resilient. Some lose all hope and commit suicide. Nevertheless, the Lord calls such people to trust and come to Him. In such darkness, His Word is the light. The Lord Jesus Christ has promised that He will not break a bruised reed, nor quench the flickering wick or candle. (Isaiah 42:3; Matthew 12:20) His kindness to the weak, weary, and wounded is evident in His Promise. Even a small spark of faith will not be ignored or rejected.

Battered Some people are battered by problems and troubles from several directions. Job was battered by Satan, who was permitted to test him, in his family, as all his children died, in his business, as he lost all his wealth, and afflicted with sores that affected his health. Job’s friends misunderstood and added to his suffering as miserable comforters. (Job 16:2) Battered does not mean God had rejected and abandoned Job.

Bruised Some are wounded physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Some smile outwardly, but carry grief, pain, guilt, fear, shame and disappointment within. Though a bruised reed is standing, it is damaged and feeble. God does not crush them, but draws them near with love, compassion, healing, patience, and grace.

Beaten Many times, people are beaten down by fear, failure, weariness, criticism, false allegations, disappointment, and defeats. The future seems to terrify them. Past failures paralyse them. Present-day weariness makes them unproductive. The good Lord invites them to come and receive rest and be renewed and face greater challenges. (Matthew 11:28)

Broken A broken reed has no hope. It cannot be rejoined. It is useless according to human wisdom. Nevertheless, the loving Lord could remake it to be fruitful. What seems to be beyond repair, God would recreate it. God restores vision, renews strength, realigns life purpose, reignites hope, and reconciles us to Himself. The broken would emerge more faithful, humble, and fruitful.
