Friendship Recession in a Lonely World

According to an article in Harvard Business Review, there is a rapid decline in friendships around the world. More and more people report having a few or no close friends. This is not just a social dilemma, but an indicator of spiritual sickness and a challenge for Christian to work with concern, intention, and love. In the words of the Lord, most are like sheep without a shepherd. (Matthew 9:36) They lack a sense of belonging.

Facts While 3% in 1990 reported having no close friends has risen to 12% in a recent survey. The number of people with 10 or more close friends dropped by one-third. This fact is called the ‘friendship recession.’ About 300 million people worldwide report having no friends at all.

Changed world The world has changed due to various factors, including digital technology. Screens rob time from people; face-to-face communication has been replaced with instant messaging. ‘Third space’, apart from home and work, is shrinking; hence, fewer people have meaningful conversations with friends.

Lord Jesus as model The Lord Jesus Christ called His disciples His friends. (John 15:13-15) The Bible teaches that friends offer mutual support, remain loyal during adversity, honestly correct and guide, and fellowship with them provides personal growth. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, Proverbs 17:17; 27:6,17)

Response of Church The context and model of the Lord have created a new door and opportunity for mission. First, the church should not allow be isolated but intentionally create small groups of 4 to 8 people who could share and care in the atmosphere of Christian nurture. Second, the groups could be family or interest groups. A systematic weekly bible study that would keep them engaged with the Word and one another should be mandated. Third, entry to groups should be easy and allow the group to grow. The group could be split when there are more members. Fourth, the people with the gift of hospitality should be hosts. Fifth, harness digital media for starting, sustaining, and continuing these small groups.
