One person was wearing gemstone rings on all ten fingers. In some fingers, it was multiple gem-studded rings. Each gem was bought for a premium price as it was made powerful by the recitation of some ancient mantras by a godman. The reason for wearing it was to bring good luck in several areas of life. One gem upgraded his house with peace, another updated him with auspicious power, another secured his business, another gave him influence over people… Yet, he lived a miserable life. The more he accumulated, the more confused and discouraged he became. Sadly, many people want to be lucky, rich, influential, powerful, and have peace.
Blessed or lucky: The Bible teaches to be ‘blessed’ rather than lucky. Blessedness comes by forgiveness of sins, meditating on the Word of God, and by qualities described in the Sermon on the Mount. (Psalm 32:1; 1:1-3; Matthew 5: 1-12)
Rich in faith: People like to be rich, to live safely, and in comfort. The Bible teaches believers to be rich in faith and rich in the Word of God. Poor people by world standards could become rich in faith towards God. (James 2:5) The Word of God should dwell or saturate the mind richly. (Colossians 3:16) When God’s word indwells, there will be resulting wisdom and gratitude.
Influential: The good Lord wants his disciples to be influential as salt of the earth and light of the world. Preserving, penetrating, and adding godliness to people around us. Since people are blinded by Satan and live in darkness, disciples are called to exert spiritual influence and lead them to light. (Matthew 5:14-16)
Truth and love: The person wanted the gem to give him power. Mostly, they desire power without meaningful purpose, and mostly selfish expressions of pride in life. In contrast, disciples walk in Truth and love, reflecting the glory of God in this world.
Peace: Wearing a ring with a particular gem does not bring peace. Only the Prince of Peace could grant peace that is beyond comprehension; the world can neither give nor take it away. (John 14:27)
