It is natural for humans to forget most things. However, certain events, experiences or words are significant. They are worthy of remembering, recalling, retrieving, and being cherished. “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19; 51) Mary, the mother of Jesus, had this habit and discipline. A very few people ponder, reflect, preserve and treasure such things as Mary did.
React: Emotionally excited, as well as emotionally weak people, react to situations without thinking. It could be an outburst, anger or withdrawal. Such outbursts could damage relationships. Sometimes it could be inappropriate laughter. Sarah was unable to fathom God’s Promises, His power to fulfil His promises and the need for faith beyond the natural realm of understanding. (Genesis 18:12-15) When the Lord Jesus Christ said the girl was not dead, the people laughed at Him. Later, the Lord raised her. (Luke 8:52-53)
Respond: Some people do think and react to situations. Hence, it is not a spontaneous and unthinking reaction, but a measured and mature response. Even if they do not think on a long-term basis. Judas, watching the Lord sent for crucifixion, responded with remorse, even though he was angry with the High Priests, threw the money away, but failed to repent. (Matthew 27:3-5) Esau reacted to his hunger, but by selling his birthright, he nevertheless responded with tears to gain a blessing, but it was too late. (Hebrews 12:17)
Reflect: Those who respond can also reflect and find God’s will. While David’s men became bitter as they had lost everything, including their families, they wanted to stone him. David was calm and quiet. In fact, he strengthened himself in the Lord. (I Samuel 30:6) By writing on the ground, the Lord called them to reflect on their own lives, who had brought a woman caught in the act of prostitution. (John 8: 1-11) Probably, they reflected and left, but did not repent.
Repentance and Reconciliation: Honest reflection leads to repentance, receiving Christ in faith, and being reconciled with God. Such people rejoice in doing God’s will.
Do I reflect, repent, reconcile and rejoice in the Lord?
